Evolution, or change, is thought to be occurring owing to the variation within species that can lead to change by natural selection.Environment plays a large part in the selection process. These ideas of natural selection were first suggested by Charles Darwin and Alfred Russel Wallace. This assessment task investigates the fossil evidence for evolution and aims to allow students to think through the relationship of the environment to the selection process by creating their own organisms.

Description of Task:
This task requires that students employ research and investigation skills, as well as their own imagination and creativity to contribute to a wiki in a way that will show their understanding of the process of evolution. Students will use information from secondary sources to describe extinct and living organisms as well as their own scientific knowledge of the theory of evolution to suggest and explain future organisms of the same lineage.

Students should:
1. Select and describe a modern organism and detail 5 adaptations of the organism (two structural, two behavioural and one physiological) and how they help it to survive in its environment. (one wiki page, name the page with the animal's name)

2. Research and describe an extinct fossil organism related to the modern organism, describe 5 adaptations and explain 1 possible selection pressure, which may have led to its extinction. (one wiki page, name the page with the animal's name)

3. Imagine and create a descendant of your modern organism and describe 5 adaptations and the environmental pressures that led to their evolution. (one wiki page, name the page with the animal's name)

4. Describe the habitats that your animals live/lived/will live in

5. Provide labelled images of each organism, this has to be substantially your own work. Images found online or in books are acceptable but the labelling must be your own. In the case of the future organism, you will need to create the image.

6. Provide links from within their text to at least three other organisms that have been researched or imagined by other year 10 students. The links should be to organisms that are related or that share similar adaptations or environments (or perhaps they are predators or prey) and should occur in the body of the text. Not as a stand-alone word or sentence.
